Cavalry During the Civil War

QUICK REVIEW – 3 stars. This is a short review for a short book that is a general introduction to Civil War cavalry. There were a few useful details but not many in this ninety-four page book.

FULL REVIEW – This is a very brief overview of the cavalry. Most of it is very general but there were sufficient details such as the time it took to groom the horses, and feed allotments that justified the less than $4 I paid for it from my favorite cheap book source, Discover Books.  But the majority of the book was just average. There is a lack of detail which is not surprising based on the length of the book.

The style was readable with a mixture of explanation and many side grey boxes with original sources materials quoted. There was some oversimplification in places that comes off as bias or inaccuracy but again not surprising based on the length. The research and documentation was quite good and there were no technical issues.

I had hoped for more detail on the daily life of the cavalry soldier including small details that studies of battles or tactics don’t have, but was a bit disappointed on that account. Not worth much time or money but since I spent little of either on this book, it met expectations but generally not much use to me. It would be a good book for kids.
